Bright Lights in the Room! ...or Maya?

Okay so we've been learning Texturing, Lighting and Rendering in class for the last week and I just want to post some of the work I've done.

Pool Ball
Our first task of the week was to light a sphere and then texture it to look like a pool ball.

Pool Table
I took the first task a step further and built a pool table and some extra balls and then lit them. I quickly discovered how much harder lighting the scene becomes when you have more objects in it.

Fruit Bowl
Last but not least I just finished texturing the fruit bowl assignment we were given to light today. I find myself tweaking for hours to get it right, even the most minute setting changes can totally alter how light effects the scene.

Legend of Korra

Why?? Because Legend of Korra was Awesome, that's why.
I really love the art style and character designs of that show. So I decided to practice drawing from it. I'm not super happy with the colouring but its late and im kinda tired at the moment. Maybe I'll fix it up later. I put it as a progression from sketch to coloured. Why? I dont know I just thought it looked cool that way.

The Results of De-motivation

Okay I hate to admit it but I've been extremely demotivated lately. I mean between work and school I haven't had a lot of time. And I haven't posted any work in over a month. Just finished my animation assessment last week too. Still waiting on my results. But I'm working on a couple of little things at the moment to build my motivation back up.

Here's my final animation. The task was simple, choose an action from the list and build a story around that action and then animate it. The story had to include an objective, conflict and then resolution. Our minimum number of frames was 375 or 15 seconds. My action was opening a door.

Anyway Enjoy. I hope to be posting more stuff again soon.

Patience is a Virtue!

Okay! After 2 and a 1/2 days and a lot of patience I finally finished my latest piece!

Over all I'm pretty happy with it. By far its the best work I have ever produced. It has a totally different feel to all my other works but I really like it.

An old friend with a new twist

Here's an old friend that I haven't seen a while. This is Ryell a character that seemed to follow me everywhere in 2010. Well today after stumbling upon a before and after Meme on deviantArt I decided to draw and paint him.

Without further adieu here are the results of today's efforts.

Take a look at the results of two years drawing practice here!

Scribbles to keep my practice up.

Over the last few days I've had a really annoying modelling assignment at school and haven't been doing a lot of drawing. I just finished the model and I'll upload it at some point but I've been dying to do some drawings. Its only a bunch of doodles cause its 1:26am but its better then nothing.

Recently I started a Deviant Art account and I've been doing little fan art pieces when I can because they can be quite quick when I'm just copying them from reference and they allow me to practice digital painting between assignments. http://aviarkxiii.deviantart.com/ feel free to take a look at my profile and +watch me if you like.

Laylina on the Digital Page.

Laylina is one of my characters from my story "A Heroes Tale VII - ZELUX". She is the first one I have "finished" a digital painting of and now I give up!! I have spent too long on this and I just cant make it look how I want it too. So here it is! I have spent about 7-8 hours on it.

Sketching Time!

Well after getting home early and having a little rest I tried another little digital sketch. I actually really like how it turned out. It was meant to be coloured but when I finished it I decided it looked good as is. I want to try painting like this again. I think it gives a really cool effect.

Total time 65 minutes.

I Needed to Paint Something

After my first day back at to work in two months I got home and decided I really needed to paint something. So here we have it, my random painting sketch of a girl character.

Took about 45 minutes.

PHOTOSHOP is BACK!! INTUOS is AMAZING!!!

YAY!! Okay so just about an hour ago I managed to get Photoshop working and was finally able to try out my new Intuos5 tablet. I is AMAZING! Much better then my annoying little bamboo. I haven't used Intuos before so I cant say how it compares to others. But I can say that the touch features aren't that useful. I find It faster just to keep using the keyboard short-cuts for touch features. Well I still love it to bits and find it so much easier to paint on.

Here is a quick sketch I did in 15mins.
Then I did a quick matte painting of it in only 20 minutes!

I know its really rough but I am super tired and I really wanted to test out my new tablet!! Hopefully I'll have heaps of time to play with it and test it out more!

The 7 Days that stole my life.

Well this has been an insane last week. Monday morning just past was the due date for my character design project. After 7 extremely long days I just managed to finish. I only wish I had more time to make improvements. But I will say I am extremely lucky. Monday afternoon when I got home after handing in my assignment my Photoshop crashed and I've spent the last 3 days trying to get it running again. So I'm glad it didn't crash during my project at least.

Well here it is, 14 pages of my character design assignment.

Did You See That Unicorn??

All right here's my latest piece of animation that I worked on. Took me about 4 and a half hours. Just got the rough blocking in place and was starting to tweak the timing a bit. Needs a lot more work, but I was just getting some practice in.

Project Final

Well after a long weekend and a few days being capped. I'm finally managing to upload the rest of my last assignment. Nothing too special. Just my progression for my matte painting and my final camera shot.

30 Minute Challenge!! Day #3

Day #3
Inspired by one of my friends class projects of having to model a chess piece I decided for today's 30 minute challenge I would paint one. It was quite simple and I easily managed to finish it in half an hour, but the simplicity allowed me to focus on the values, lighting and form of the image. Which is something I need to practice.

30 Minute Challenge!! Day #2

Day #2
Today for my 30 minute challenge I decide to work on a face. I worked from a photo I found on Google and this time instead of focusing on detail I tried to capture the overall values of the photo. I managed to get further in to my painting then yesterday and I used only basic painting tools. I feel relatively happy with what I got done.

After Effects... You have kiddnapped my sanity and i would like it back thankyou.

Okay so today we got given our first really big assignment in class. We have 4 days to design a 2D background that can be moved about in 3D space. Sounds confusing I know. I was a completely astonished to see what this technique is used for and how seamless it can be.

So first I spent a couple of hours doing background research and put together some concepts for my background. Quick concepts that took about 20 minutes each.

I chose the underwater ruins concept because I thought It had really great depth and would be simple to color and complete. I broke down my concept and tweaked it to simple shapes and forms that I could use to test my background in AFX.
I then chucked my test background into AFX and began composting it in 3D. After hours of ruthless tinkering I got somewhere, only to have AFX crap out and decide not to render for me. Well I finally got it to work and here I am.

30 Minute Challenge!! Day #1

Okay so I've taken on an interesting challenge. It's called the 30 Minute Challenge. I have start a digital painting everyday and I can only spend 30 minutes on it. Then I have to stop and upload it. Hopefully I'll start to see some awesome improvements in my speed and skill in my digital paintings.

Day #1
Okay well for my first day of the 30 Minute Challenge I seriously underestimated how long 30 minutes is. I barely managed to scrape the surface on this landscape I started painting. I used a photo from Google as reference cause I thought I could paint faster with it. Pretty soon I realized that I was paying to much attention to the detail of the photo. Rather then trying to get as much as I can done in the 30 minutes.

Dialouge!! He speaks.

My first attempt at dialogue in Maya, not to bad it took about 3 hours. I found it really finicky mostly.
"Yea I mean, It's not to bad I mean, should be okay I'm not to worried about it really"

He Walks!! A Man in Motion.

Okay starting to get the basics down. Here we go a walk cycle I attempted from the side and front. It took me about 6 hours to to do. Which sounds like along time but it felt like nothing. This is my second attempt a walk cycle after my first attempt failed miserably sliding everywhere.

Rig was provided by Media Design School.

Modelling

My first model in Maya. Rendered with basic colours and lights.

Painting Time.

Decided to work on my digital painting tonight. I've never painted a person before, so I worked from an old photo. Pretty happy with it I suppose.
